3 Tips For Preventing Patio Weeds

From an outdoor space for grilling out and relaxing in the sun, to an increase in your home's appeal and value, the benefits of a patio should be easy to see. Unfortunately, maintaining a patio is not as simple as some people think, especially if and when weeds start to erupt. You may be surprised to learn how quickly and how fiercely weeds and grow, erupting in between your patio pavers and stones and creeping across the entire outdoor surface. Thankfully, help is available. Here are a few simple tips for protecting your patio from weeds.

A special kind of sand can be applied to the patio to help protect it from weeds. Polymeric sand is super-fine sand that contains silica, which creates a binding agent when it comes in contact with moisture. This binding agent can be applied to the grooves, cracks, and crevices of your patio, filling in the gaps and blocking potential weed growth.

To use, mix some of the sand with water and spread across your patio. Use a wide-bristled broom to spread the sand across your patio, focusing on the grooves of your patio pavers. Allow the sand to sit and set into place, enjoying a weed-free and more durable patio surface.

Applying herbicide to your patio is one of the easiest and most obvious ways to prevent weeds. Of course, herbicide kills existing weeds and prevents the further growth of weeds, so it can be a win-win for homeowners.

Choose from a variety of herbicides available at your local discount retailer or home/garden store. Many are available in bottles that can be sprayed directly or you can choose to add the herbicide to a larger outdoor sprayer if you need to treat a larger area.

Avoid making excessive contact with the herbicide products. Wear garden gloves and an eye mask to reduce contact to your hands and eyes.

Holistic Weed Control

If you prefer a less toxic option for killing and controlling weeds, there are many holistic options to consider.

A solution containing vinegar and liquid dish soap can be effective. Combine the ingredients alone with water in a large outdoor sprayer. Shake to mix and then douse your patio with the solution.

Baking soda is another holistic option that can help rid your patio of weeds. To use, wet the weeds with your garden hose. Then, sprinkle a good amount of baking soda directly onto the weeds. The weeds will begin to yellow and brown slowly over time.
